Kfar Aza residents demand accountability

Residents of the kibbutz Kfar Aza, where 64 civilians were killed and 19 taken hostage on 7 October 2023, have called for an independent inquiry into Israel’s security failures. The community’s civil defence squad was largely wiped out when Hamas-led attackers overran the local armoury shortly after 07:00.

Questions about intelligence and warnings

Reports indicate that soldiers posted along the Gaza border had warned senior commanders of possible attacks in the weeks before 7 October. The warnings were allegedly ignored or not acted upon. Claims that the United Arab Emirates president had called Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu 10 days before the attack to warn of Hamas plans have been dismissed by Netanyahu’s office as false.

Netanyahu’s response and political fallout

Prime Minister Netanyahu has denied personal responsibility, blaming his security chiefs for failing to wake him in the hours before the assault. He has suggested that an earlier alert would have prevented the attacks. The incident led to the resignation of the IDF chief of staff and the dismissal of several military commanders, but no state-level inquiry has yet been established.
