Putin pledges Russia’s support to end US-led war on Iran

Russian President Vladimir Putin told Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian that Moscow would “do everything” to help end the United States-led war on Iran, Russian news agencies reported on 8 October 2026. The statement was made during a meeting in Turkmenistan on the sidelines of the Commonwealth of Independent States summit, ahead of the gathering of former Soviet republics.

In the conversation, Putin emphasized that Iran was making real efforts to end the conflict, which he said had broken out through no fault of its own. He also described a “positive evolution” in Iran-Russia relations and said Moscow was prepared to mediate efforts to end the war in the Middle East. The two leaders had previously met on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Kyrgyzstan.

Russia and Iran have reinforced diplomatic and military ties, signing a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty last year that covers trade, military cooperation, science, culture and education. Both countries face heavy Western sanctions.

The pledge comes as Iran-US talks appear stalled. US President Donald Trump said the United States would not launch an attack on Iran before the November 3 midterm elections, noting that the two sides were holding “productive” talks. Diplomatic efforts to resolve Russia’s offensive in Ukraine also appear deadlocked, even as both sides intensify attacks.
