Russian strike on buses in Kramatorsk

A Russian glide bomb attack on two civilian buses in the eastern front-line city of Kramatorsk killed at least 30 people, rescue officials said on 8 October 2026. Three more people died in the village of Bilenke, part of the Kramatorsk community, and 18 were wounded, according to Donetsk regional head Vadym Filashkin.

Context and reaction

Kramatorsk and neighbouring Slovyansk form a fortress belt that Moscow seeks to seize as part of its claim to the Donbas industrial region. Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, said the strike would not go unanswered and urged the world to react harshly. He posted on Telegram that Russia is trying to destroy all life in Donbas and that the world must respond.

Institutional response

Moscow has not yet commented on the attack. Donetsk authorities ordered all public transport to stop in the region and urged residents to move to safer parts of Ukraine. The Kramatorsk city council described the strike as a “horrific crime committed by the Russian army against the civilian population” and noted that the target had no military significance.

International consequence

The attack follows a surge in Russian attacks across Ukraine and a rise in civilian casualties. The United Nations reports that Ukraine has seen more civilian deaths by August 2026 than in all of 2025. The incident may influence Ukraine’s partners to consider new defence packages, though no concrete measures have been announced yet.
