Trump’s Iowa steel plant faces doubts over construction and financing
Trump’s plan to build a $15bn steel plant in Iowa has raised questions about whether the project will be built and funded.

Trump’s Iowa steel plant faces doubts
Trump announced plans to build the largest steel plant in the United States, a $15bn facility in Lee County, Iowa, to be constructed by Mesabi Metallics, an India-based company. The announcement has sparked skepticism over whether the plant will be built and delivered as promised, given the developer’s financial history and the lack of evidence of construction progress.
Mesabi Metallics has a record of bankruptcies and missed deadlines. Essar Steel Minnesota, the parent company, filed for bankruptcy in 2016 after construction delays and financing issues at its Nashwauk, Minnesota project. The company lost its mining leases in 2021 when the state of Minnesota revoked them after a missed deadline. The plant that has been 20 years in the making has therefore faced repeated setbacks.
A local NBC news affiliate in Iowa reviewed county records and found no major property purchases tied to the project this year. County officials say they do not have details from the company about its plans, and no permits have been filed with supervisors. Mesabi Metallics has not responded to requests for comment, and the site location has not been disclosed by elected officials or the company.
The state legislature has considered subsidies for the project, but the state’s budget shortfalls and more than $1bn in deficits over the past two years have led to criticism from the Sierra Club chapter in Iowa. The project’s financing and location remain unverified, and it is unclear whether the plant will be built and delivered as promised.
