Trump signs Russian diesel import deal

Trump announced a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin to supply hundreds of thousands of tons of diesel fuel to the United States and global markets. The announcement follows legislation signed three weeks earlier that authorised new sanctions and tariffs on countries importing Russian oil and gas.

Intended political benefit

The president said the arrangement would help lower fuel costs for American farmers, ranchers and truckers. It comes amid rising fuel prices that have affected U.S. agriculture states such as Iowa, Kansas, Texas and Ohio, which are key battlegrounds in the upcoming mid-term elections.

International reaction

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticised the deal, calling it a “gift” to Putin that would be repaid with “terror and perfidy”. European allies have also expressed concern that the U.S. is helping fund the Russian war machine.

Supply uncertainty

The exact mechanism of how Russia will deliver the fuel and what Russia will receive in return remains unclear. Russian refinery capacity has been damaged by Ukrainian strikes, and the promised 300,000-ton shipment would represent only about half of U.S. daily diesel consumption. The impact on U.S. fuel prices is therefore uncertain.
