UN Warns of Healthcare Crisis in Darfur as Security Council Extends Sudan Sanctions
The UN World Health Organization highlighted severe shortages of healthcare, food, water and protection for over 700,000 displaced people in Darfur.

WHO Highlights Healthcare Shortages in Darfur
The World Health Organization warned on 8 October 2026 that more than 700,000 displaced people in Tawila, North Darfur, face severe shortages of healthcare, food, water and protection. Dr. Abdinasir Abubakar, WHO’s top official in Sudan, visited hospitals, health centres and laboratories in every Darfur state except East Darfur during a 10-day mission in September. He noted widespread malnutrition, limited mental-health services and dangerously low stocks of medicines for HIV, tuberculosis and neglected tropical diseases. Only 23% of the $97.7 million humanitarian appeal for 2026 has been funded, and WHO called for an urgent increase in resources and safe, sustained access.
Security Council Extends Sudan Sanctions
On the same day, the Security Council unanimously renewed its Sudan sanctions regime for two months until 11 December 2026. The regime includes targeted sanctions and an arms embargo, and the panel of experts monitoring it now has a mandate until 11 January 2027. The renewal, drafted by the United States, is described as a “technical rollover” that leaves the mandate unchanged. A prior one-month rollover had been adopted on 11 September. Washington had sought to extend the embargo to the whole of Sudan and all parties to the current war, but the proposal failed to gain consensus, with about half of the council’s members preferring a one-year renewal confined to Darfur.
Ongoing Conflict and Diplomatic Stalemate
The war between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces continues to impact civilians and aid operations. An aerial attack on two World Food Programme trucks in South Kordofan on 3 October killed a driver. Diplomatic efforts remain stalled on a US-backed 90-day ceasefire proposal that the army has resisted, according to news reports. Independent Human Rights Council-appointed investigators have warned of further risks to civilians and aid workers.
