Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said a new Carpathian 8 agreement signed 50 deals valued at more than €1bn, focusing on energy independence from Russia.

New Carpathian 8 initiative announced
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy used his Telegram channel to report that the inaugural Carpathian 8 summit in western Ukraine resulted in the signing of 50 agreements with a combined value exceeding €1bn (about $1.15bn). The president indicated that over half of the accords relate to renewable energy, particularly solar and wind projects, with the stated aim of reducing Ukraine’s reliance on Russian energy supplies.
Participants and scope of the partnership
The summit brought together leaders from Romania, Serbia, Poland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary and representatives of the European Union. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Romanian President Nicusor Dan were among the officials present. Zelenskyy thanked the regional partners for maintaining trade and transport links since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022 and described the agreement as a step toward deeper cooperation at the EU level.
Related developments and open questions
The Guardian also reported that Donald Trump signed legislation imposing additional sanctions on Russia and its energy trade partners, and that voting had begun in Russian State Duma elections. Zelenskyy provided a total number and value for the agreements but gave few details about the individual deals.
