Trump announces energy ceasefire

On 12 October 2026, Donald Trump posted on Truth Social that an “ENERGY CEASEFIRE” had been agreed between Russia and Ukraine and that both sides should not break it. No further details were provided.

Ukrainian response

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on X that a drone had struck a Kyiv power plant on Sunday, leading to outages in the capital. He also reported a strike on a power plant in Kharkiv and described the skies as “infested with Russian ‘shaheds’”—a type of Iranian-made drone used in the conflict. Zelenskyy added that the ceasefire announcement was “news to me” and that Ukraine was ready to refrain from striking Russian energy infrastructure.

Russian attacks on Sunday

Russian attacks on Sunday killed six people in two Ukrainian cities. In Kharkiv, a grocery store strike killed three and injured 20, including two children. In a western Ukrainian city, a Russian strike killed three people. The regional governor reported the casualties.

Unconfirmed Russian stance

Russia has not confirmed any agreement to the ceasefire. The Kremlin has yet to acknowledge the deal, leaving the status of the ceasefire uncertain.

Wider diplomatic context

NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe, Alexus Grynkewich, was scheduled to warn Russia at a Warsaw security conference. The Lithuanian foreign minister called for the EU to designate the Russian GRU as a terrorist organisation. Trump’s ceasefire announcement followed his earlier controversial agreement to buy Russian diesel fuel, which had drawn criticism from Ukraine and European allies.
