UN Human Rights Chief Condemns Ukraine Attacks

On 8 October 2026, UN human rights chief Volker Türk said he was appalled by a wave of attacks that have killed civilians across Ukraine over the past four days. He cited a strike on two public buses in Kramatorsk that left at least 30 civilians dead, and noted that since Monday at least 85 civilians have been killed and 346 injured in Russian strikes. Türk described the attacks as “reprehensible” and warned that deliberate attacks on civilians could amount to war crimes.

Displacement of Gazans in Flood-Prone Areas

UNRWA reports that 235,000 displaced Gazans are being forced to live in 400 unsuitable flood-prone sites, with an additional 44,000 still based in unstable buildings that may collapse in winter. The UN and its partners continue to support Gazans amid ongoing insecurity, with people still being killed and displaced one year after a fragile ceasefire between Hamas and Israel.

Fuel Deliveries to Sustain Gaza Services

The UN brought more fuel into Gaza on Tuesday to help keep basic services running during the fourth winter under fire. Aid teams collected medical, educational supplies and food from the Kerem Shalom crossing. UN top aid coordinator Tom Fletcher appealed for more funding for fuel to prevent a dangerous slowdown of healthcare, water provision, rescue operations, debris removal and other critical services.
